Who Was Uncle Herschel McCartney?
In January of 1998, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store lost a special friend, known to most folks simply as Uncle Herschel. The real life uncle to co-founder Dan Evins, Uncle Herschel was Cracker Barrel’s original "Good Will Ambassador". He was truly the country gentleman who personified the era and traditions Cracker Barrel hopes to preserve through its mission of pleasing people®.
Through his work with Cracker Barrel, Uncle Herschel helped shape not only the company’s image, but also its values. Uncle Herschel’s philosophy for life was to "Treat everyone as you’d like to be treated yourself. Be down to earth, humble, soft spoken, and wear a smile." So to celebrate Uncle Herschel’s life, Cracker Barrel commissioned a life-size bronze sculpture.
On May 17, 1999, the statue of Uncle Herschel became a permanent part of the Home Office campus. Sculptor Russ Faxon of Bell Buckle, TN created the Uncle Herschel Statue. This statue is located near the front entrance of campus and can be seen when entering and exiting the site. The sculpture depicts our own Uncle Herschel and a PAR IV Cracker Barrel server sitting on park benches embarked in conversation.
The Uncle Herschel memorial also features a third unoccupied bench. This "invites" anyone to rest for awhile and delight in the nostalgia. The server in the sculptor is talking to Uncle Herschel and he is listening.
